Who Needs an Exposed Firearm Permit?

In California, if you are licensed or registered in the security, alarm, or private investigation fields, you may not carry a gun on duty whether loaded or unloaded unless you have been issued an exposed firearm permit by the Department of Consumer Affairs by a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) certified firearms training instructor a BSIS certified training facility.


What Training is Required?

To obtain a Firearm Qualification, while working as a security guard, the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) has developed a specific course for training on the moral and legal aspect of carrying a firearm, de-escalation of potentially violent situations, knowledge of and maintaining the parts of a firearm, how to handle a weapon and acutal experience of firing a weapon. This course presents the current BSIS Firearms Qualification course mandated by the Department of Consumer Affairs, BSIS that includes a minium of 8 hours of classroom training and range training as many hours as needed.


How to Register for the Exposed Firearm Class?

To register online for the Exposed Firearm class go to the Security Guard Training tab and fill in your information, and our BSIS instructor will contact you about upcoming course dates.


Need Re-qualification Classes?

Firearm permits expire two years from the date of issuance. Applicant must re-qualify four times during the life of the permit: twice during the first year after the date of issuance, and twice during the second year. Re-qualifications must be at least four months apart. To receive the new BSIS mandated two hour classroom course and re-qualification go to the Security Guard Training tab and fill in your information, and our BSIS instructor will contact you about upcoming course dates.

    The range training will give you practice in safely handling and firing your weapon. You must requalify on the range twice a year before renewing your permit.
